This custom electric bike conversion was crafted for a rider determined to conquer mountains effortlessly and “go anywhere” on their Specialized Epic mountain bike. What started as a stock Bafang BBSHD-powered setup quickly evolved into a true beast of the trails, with multiple high-performance modifications designed for extreme power, durability, and versatility. At its core, the bike features the well-known Bafang BBSHD mid-drive motor, originally rated at 1000W. However, our team at Rebellion Bike expertly hacked the motor’s control system to run on the Grin Phaserunner, boosting the output to an incredible 3300W! This dramatic power upgrade transforms the Epic into a machine capable of tackling the steepest climbs and roughest terrain with ease.

Recognizing that this bike would face wet and muddy conditions regularly, we designed and CNC-machined a custom BBSHD motor cover plate to replace the original controller housing. This modification enabled the removal of the stock controller and the relocation of the new external Phaserunner controller, while maintaining extreme waterproofing and protecting the cables. The drivetrain was simplified to a single-speed setup because with this much power, traditional gearing isn’t necessary. The bike uses the chunkiest heavy-duty chain available, paired with the widest, most aggressive tread tires the frame could accommodate, maximizing traction and durability.

A standout feature is the custom full-width motocross-style throttle, which operates via a special adapter converting the throttle’s cable pull into a digital voltage signal compatible with the Phaserunner controller, ensuring precise power modulation. This build includes many bespoke components and upgrades, making it an extreme joy to ride for serious trail enthusiasts seeking unmatched power and reliability.
